Junk Food – 5 Healthy And Delicious Substitutes

The office pantry is usually stocked with two things: instant coffee and a bowl of sweets someone brought back from a trip. By 3pm most people have gone through half the bowl without noticing. A few small changes to what's on the desk fix that without anyone having to "eat clean."

Here's what actually works as a swap, and why the usual junk food option loses out:

Chocolate biscuits → dates. A biscuit gives a fast sugar spike and an equally fast crash. Two or three dates — Ajwa, Safawi, whatever's on hand — give sweetness plus fibre, so the crash doesn't hit as hard or as fast. They also don't melt in a hot office bag the way chocolate does.

Sweetened iced coffee → black coffee with a date on the side. If the sugar is the part you actually want, get it from something with texture. Chewing a date takes longer than sipping syrup, which slows down how fast you go back for more.

Potato chips are harder to give up cold turkey, so don't. Buy the unsalted or lightly salted kind of mixed nuts and put them in the same spot the chips used to sit. A small container lasts through the week if you're not eating straight from a big bag — pour out a handful and put the rest away in a drawer.

For the vending machine run when you forgot lunch, a bag of dates and cashews in a desk drawer beats whatever's behind the glass. It travels better than fresh fruit, doesn't need a fridge, and is already there before the craving hits.

None of this requires cutting anything out completely — a biscuit now and then isn't the problem, the daily default is. Swap the default and the rest sorts itself out.
